Hyderabad: Director General of Police B. Shivdhar Reddy on Thursday inaugurated the fourth edition of the Telangana State Police Sports Meet at the Cyberabad police parade grounds, underscoring the force’s focus on fitness and professional excellence.
He lit the ceremonial torch presented by Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dr. M. Ramesh, formally opening the Telangana State Police Sports Meet–2026. The event marked a key fixture in the State police calendar.
Addressing participants, the DGP praised personnel for handling diverse responsibilities, including security for international summits, major sporting events, elections and large public gatherings. He said participation in sports strengthened physical endurance and mental resilience. Moreover, he stressed that teamwork, leadership and discipline gained through sports were vital for policing. He added that sportsmanship and unity were more important than medals.
The DGP also called for greater participation of women personnel in all disciplines. He reiterated the department’s commitment to inclusive representation.
Participation details at Telangana State Police Sports Meet
Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dr. M. Ramesh said 2,532 athletes from all 33 districts were competing in the Telangana State Police Sports Meet. Of them, 300 were women personnel. Competitions are being held in 31 disciplines, including 14 events exclusively for women.
Ramesh announced that Telangana would host the forthcoming All India Police Football Tournament next month. He said the development reflected the State’s growing stature in police sports. He also acknowledged the support of various departments and institutions in providing infrastructure and logistics.
Inspector General of Police (P&L, Sports & Welfare) Dr. Gajarao Bhupal highlighted the achievements of Telangana police athletes at national and international levels. He said distinguished sportspersons were felicitated during the ceremony. He further reiterated that the State government offered cash rewards and service increments to medal winners at national competitions.
Personnel from zones, commissionerates and specialised units, including TGSP-I, TGSP-II, Greyhounds, OCTOPUS, Intelligence, CID, IT & Communications, Ministerial Staff and TGPA, participated in the meet.
After the inauguration, the DGP watched a volleyball match and interacted with students of the Young India Police School.
Alongside the sporting events, the department organised a police welfare and wellness expo at the Commissionerate premises. The expo displayed stalls on health care, nutrition, fitness equipment, organic products and innovative policing technologies. It will remain open to police families and visitors until Saturday.
