Hyderabad: The Delhi Prisons induction training programme was inaugurated at the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), Chanchalguda, marking a major inter-state training initiative.
Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy inaugurated the programme. Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Soumya Mishra received him along with senior officers and faculty members.
The Delhi Prisons induction training programme covered 381 personnel nominated for 2026 in phases. The first batch started with 62 trainees. It included 61 personnel from Delhi Prisons and one warder from Telangana.
The batch had 18 Assistant Superintendents, including three women. It also included 43 matrons or women warders. One male warder from Telangana joined the group.
Additionally, a warder from Andaman and Nicobar Islands was expected to join later. Officials said this would strengthen inter-regional cooperation.
The nine-month Delhi Prisons induction training programme focused on professional competence, discipline, and humane practices. Indoor sessions covered prison rules, criminology, and victimology. They also included psychology, sociology, and criminal laws.

The curriculum further covered constitutional values, human rights, and prison technology. Outdoor sessions included physical training, parade drills, yoga, and meditation. These followed national standards set by BPR&D.
Trainees used SICA’s infrastructure, including classrooms, an auditorium, a library, hostels, and training grounds. The campus also provided a gym and dining facilities.
B. Shivadhar Reddy said prison service required responsibility and commitment. He stated it focused on reform and reintegration of inmates. He added that the role extended beyond routine security duties.
He urged trainees to maintain discipline and integrity. He also asked them to treat inmates with dignity and focus on transformation.
Soumya Mishra said institutional training strengthened correctional systems. She noted that Delhi Prisons had shown trust in SICA by deputing personnel. She added that the collaboration reflected confidence in the institute.
She recalled earlier training programmes conducted for Tihar Jails and other regions. She also cited programmes held with the Bureau of Police Research and Development. She said these maintained high standards.
She stressed that modern prison administration focused on rehabilitation and rights-based approaches. She urged trainees to act as agents of reform.
Officials appreciated the efforts of SICA faculty and resource persons. They said their expertise ensured quality training delivery.
The event also marked the 60th birthday of B. Shivadhar Reddy. Officers and staff acknowledged his service during the programme.
