Defence canteen liquor racket busted in Hyderabad, Rs 10 lakh seized

Hyderabad: Excise officials busted a Defence canteen liquor racket in Hastinapuram and seized liquor worth Rs 10 lakh during a raid.

Officials said a retired army man allegedly ran the racket and supplied premium liquor to select high-profile customers in the city. The accused, Dodla Suresh Reddy (48), allegedly sourced costly liquor from Defence canteens in Bengaluru and Haryana. He then sold it illegally in Hyderabad.

However, he escaped before the Excise team reached the location, officials said.

Defence canteen liquor racket involved supply to elite buyers

Acting on a tip-off, Excise Enforcement officials led by Superintendent Jeevan Kiran raided a house in Sri Ramana Colony Phase-II in Hastinapuram early on Tuesday. CI Subhash Chander, SI Akhil, and staff joined the operation.

During the search, the team seized 361 bottles of premium liquor. Officials estimated the value of the seized stock at around Rs 10 lakh. They suspect the house served as a storage point for liquor brought from outside the State.

Investigators are examining the role of affluent buyers in the case. They suspect operators diverted liquor meant only for authorised Defence personnel and sold it at higher prices in the city.

Suresh Reddy fled before the raid and remains absconding. Officials said teams are trying to trace and apprehend him.

The seizure has triggered a wider probe into possible misuse of Defence canteen supply channels. Senior officials, including Enforcement Director Shanawaz Qasim, Deputy Commissioner Dasarath, and Assistant Commissioner R. Kishan, commended the team for detecting the racket.
