Damodar Rajanarasimha issues directions to strengthen Unani healthcare services

Hyderabad: Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha on Monday issued directions to strengthen Unani healthcare services and ensure quality treatment reached more people across Telangana.

The Minister reviewed the functioning of the AYUSH Department at the Secretariat. Meanwhile, he assessed medical services, infrastructure, ongoing construction works and future plans for the Government Nizamia Tibbi College and Nizamia General Hospital.

Rajanarasimha described the two institutions as premier centres for Unani medicine in the state. He said the government attached high priority to their development.

Unani healthcare services to get infrastructure boost

The Minister directed the TGMSIDC Chief Engineer to speed up construction of the new OP block and pharmacy building at Nizamia General Hospital. Further, he instructed officials to complete the works by January. The facilities should open for public use immediately after completion.

Rajanarasimha said vacancies among doctors, teaching faculty and other staff were affecting healthcare delivery. Additionally, he said the vacancies were disrupting academic activities. The Minister directed the Health Department Principal Secretary to prepare recruitment proposals and submit them to the government without delay.

He also instructed officials to ensure adequate stocks of medicines, medical equipment and essential infrastructure at Unani dispensaries and hospitals across the state.

AYUSH Director Srikanth Babu said the government filled 138 Assistant Professor posts last year. Moreover, the recruitment addressed the shortage of doctors. He added that the government sanctioned ₹52.50 crore to restore the heritage buildings of Nizamia Tibbi College and Nizamia General Hospital. The funds will also support new buildings. Officials also continue to procure and distribute essential Unani medicines.

The Minister reviewed key issues facing the department. Meanwhile, he directed officials to expedite the proposal for a state-level Unani drug manufacturing unit. He also asked them to resolve issues related to the Government Unani Dispensary building at Moula Ali. The Minister instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted medical services.

Charminar MLA Mir Zulfiqar Ali, Health Department Principal Secretary Dr Christina Z. Chongthu, AYUSH Director Srikanth Babu, the Nizamia Tibbi Hospital Superintendent and other senior officials attended the meeting.
