Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao will unveil Telangana’s first El Niño contingency plan at the State Secretariat on Thursday. The scientific roadmap aims to help the state tackle possible drought conditions linked to the El Niño weather pattern.
Ahead of the release, the minister reviewed preparedness with heads of departments from the Agriculture and Cooperation Departments. He said experts prepared the El Niño contingency plan after conducting scientific assessments. The plan will support timely decisions across the state.
El Niño contingency plan guides district officials
According to the minister, the El Niño plan provides a detailed action strategy for district collectors and district-level officials. It helps them manage rainfall deficits and drought-like conditions.
The plan includes mandal-wise and district-wise rainfall deficit data. It also provides guidelines for responding to local conditions. Additionally, it contains scientifically analysed weather forecasts for the next two months.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) will share daily, weekly and monthly weather updates with the concerned departments. Officials will monitor weather conditions continuously and issue timely advisories to farmers.
As a result, departments will coordinate their efforts to guide farmers on crop selection, water management and farm practices. The initiative aims to reduce crop losses and improve climate preparedness.
