High Court issues notices over Kaleshwaram barrages

Hyderabad: The High Court issued notices to the Centre, the Telangana government, the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) and other concerned officials over issues related to the Kaleshwaram barrages. The court sought their response on the safety and restoration of key project components.

The notices came after a lawyer filed a public interest petition alleging that the governments had failed to address issues affecting the Kaleshwaram project. The petitioner claimed that water was flowing wastefully into the sea while the damaged pillars at the Medigadda barrage remained unrepaired due to political considerations.

Kaleshwaram barrages case posted for July 21

During the hearing, the petitioner argued that the state government should restore the Medigadda barrage pillars in accordance with the recommendations of the NDSA report to safeguard farmers’ interests. The lawyer also sought a direction for the NDSA to inspect the remaining reservoirs under the project and submit a report.

After hearing the arguments, the High Court directed the Centre, the Telangana government, the NDSA and the concerned authorities to explain the measures taken to protect the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages, along with the Kannepalli and Sundilla pump houses.

The court adjourned the matter for further hearing to July 21.
