CWC meeting plans nationwide protest against MGNREGA renaming from Jan 5

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday attended the Congress Working Committee meeting in New Delhi, where the party decided to launch a nationwide protest against the renaming of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act from January 5.

The Congress Working Committee met at the All India Congress Committee headquarters at Indira Bhawan. The meeting took place under the chairmanship of Mallikarjun Kharge. Around 80 senior leaders participated in the deliberations.

Among those present were Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Digvijay Singh, Meira Kumar, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Ashok Gehlot. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and several special invitees also attended the meeting.

During the discussions, leaders examined what the party described as flaws in the new law. This law renamed MGNREGA as ‘G Ram G’ or VB-G RAM G. According to Congress leaders, the change weakened the original intent of the scheme.

At the CWC meeting, leaders then debated a clear plan of action. As a result, the committee resolved to launch protests across the country starting January 5.

Later in the day, Revanth Reddy posted on X about the decision. In his post, he said the Congress would begin a nationwide “Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Scheme Bachao” movement. He added that the resolution was adopted by the party’s highest decision-making body.

Referring to the scheme’s origins, Revanth Reddy said the UPA government had introduced it to reduce hunger and ensure jobs. Moreover, he said it helped improve basic facilities in villages. Therefore, the Congress Working Committee strongly condemned the BJP-led central government’s move.

The party resolved to protect the scheme named after Mahatma Gandhi. Consequently, it decided to hold large-scale protests and demonstrations across the country.
