Hyderabad: The BRS accused the Congress-led Telangana government of burdening the state with ₹2.17 lakh crore in loans over just 20 months in office. Party leaders alleged that despite the massive borrowings, the government had not initiated a single major infrastructure project.
They said no schemes on the scale of the Kaleshwaram irrigation project or major public buildings such as the Secretariat or district collectorates were launched. Even flagship welfare initiatives like Dalit Bandhu and sheep distribution were not introduced, they claimed.
Telangana government loans: BRS cites CAG and RBI data
According to figures cited by the BRS, which they said came from CAG and RBI data, the government borrowed ₹1.66 lakh crore in the first 15 months between December 2023 and March 2025. In the 2025–26 fiscal year so far, it has raised ₹31,900 crore under FRBM norms and another ₹18,900 crore through corporations outside the FRBM cap.
The party calculated that in 610 days, the Congress administration borrowed the equivalent of ₹355.73 crore per day, or nearly ₹15 crore every hour. BRS leaders contrasted this with Congress’s pre-election criticism of the previous government’s debt record, accusing the ruling party of surpassing it in less than two years.
They said that by August 11, 2025, the Revanth Reddy government’s total loans under FRBM and non-FRBM categories had reached ₹2.17 lakh crore, yet it had failed to deliver on its six poll guarantees and 420 other promises.
