Bhatti seeks Centre support for Singareni coal gasification plans

Hyderabad: Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu met Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy in New Delhi on Wednesday and sought Central support for Singareni’s coal gasification plans and new coal block allocations.

During the meeting, both leaders discussed Singareni Collieries Company Limited’s future plans, coal gasification opportunities, new coal block allocations and issues linked to the Tadicherla Coal Block-II mining lease.

Coal gasification plans gain momentum in Telangana

Bhatti Vikramarka said coal should support value-added industrial applications instead of remaining limited to conventional power generation.

He informed the Union Minister that Singareni was ready to move towards coal gasification as the Centre increased focus on such projects nationwide.

The Deputy Chief Minister said Singareni was exploring advanced technologies to use coal resources more efficiently. Similarly, Coal India Limited had already taken up similar initiatives.

He said coal gasification would increase the value of coal resources. In addition, the projects would strengthen energy security, industrial growth and employment generation.

Bhatti Vikramarka also requested technical guidance, policy support and assistance in linking Singareni projects with Central schemes.

Coal gasification linked to future energy demand

The Deputy Chief Minister said Singareni played a major role in meeting coal supply and power sector requirements across southern India.

Therefore, he stressed the need for fresh coal resource allocations to meet future energy demand.

Bhatti Vikramarka informed Kishan Reddy that Koyyagudem Block-III in the Godavari Valley Coalfields remained important for Telangana’s power needs.

He said authorities auctioned the block earlier. However, operations did not begin even after four years. Consequently, he requested the Centre to allocate Koyyagudem Block-III to Singareni.

The meeting also reviewed issues related to Tadicherla Coal Block-II. Bhatti Vikramarka said Singareni completed pre-mining and exploration activities for the block and urged officials to speed up the mining lease process.

He added that Tadicherla Coal Block-II remained crucial for Singareni’s future expansion and Telangana’s energy security.

Coal gasification proposals receive positive response

Bhatti Vikramarka urged the Centre to grant prior approval under Section 5 of the MMDR Act, 1957, and accelerate the mining lease process for Tadicherla Coal Block-II.

Kishan Reddy responded positively to the requests. He also assured the state government that officials would soon organise a joint meeting with Central authorities, state officials and Singareni representatives.

The proposed meeting will review coal gasification plans, Koyyagudem Block-III allocation and issues linked to the Tadicherla Coal Block-II mining lease.

Finance Principal Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Planning Secretary Dr Gaurav Uppal, SCCL CMD Dr Jyoti Buddha Prakash, Director Gautam Potru and Director K. Venkateshwarlu attended the meeting.
