Vikarabad earns national recognition for HIV/AIDS control

Hyderabad: Vikarabad district has earned national recognition for its performance in HIV/AIDS control, prevention and treatment. The district achieved the targets prescribed by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO).

Vikarabad received the Saksham Certificate for meeting the national guidelines. Only 70 districts across the country achieved the required benchmarks.

District Collector Deepak Tiwari guided the initiative. Meanwhile, District Medical and Health Officer Dr. K. Sudhakar Lal and the medical staff helped the district achieve the targets.

Health officials identified 4,536 people living with HIV. Further, they ensured that at least 95 per cent of people living with HIV knew their HIV status. Authorities also provided Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) to every diagnosed patient.

HIV/AIDS control targets bring national honour

The district achieved the targets with support from the State AIDS Control Society, NACO, ART centres, Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTCs), healthcare workers, ASHA workers and voluntary organisations.

Additionally, officials credited the achievement to early HIV detection and immediate treatment under the “Test and Treat” policy. They also continued counselling and follow-up services to improve treatment adherence.

Regular ART medication helps reduce viral load. Moreover, it enables people living with HIV to lead healthier lives and reduces the risk of transmission.

District Collector Deepak Tiwari appealed to people to overcome fear, stigma and misconceptions about HIV. Meanwhile, he urged the public to undergo free HIV testing at government hospitals or ICTCs and begin treatment immediately after diagnosis.

Finally, the Collector thanked Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha, the Speaker, public representatives, the Health Department’s Principal Secretary and healthcare staff for supporting the district’s achievement.
