Hyderabad: Veteran farmers’ leader Sarampally Malla Reddy died at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad on Monday morning. He was 88. Malla Reddy had suffered from age-related ailments and health problems for some time.
He had received treatment at NIMS before his death on Monday morning. His death triggered grief among farmers and farmers’ organisations. Several farmers mourned his death and recalled his decades of involvement in struggles concerning agricultural and rural issues.
Sarampally Malla Reddy served farmers for decades
Sarampally Malla Reddy had served as vice-president of the All India Kisan Sabha. Born in Narsampet in Warangal district, he spent several decades raising issues affecting farmers. He took part in numerous movements concerning agricultural problems.
Malla Reddy also actively participated in struggles over irrigation and drinking water issues in Bhuvanagiri district. In addition, he joined agitations concerning people displaced by land acquisition.
His work brought him into several campaigns involving farmers, water requirements and land displacement. Farmers’ organisations expressed shock and grief following his death.
Mortal remains to be kept at MB Bhavan
The family planned to shift Sarampally Malla Reddy’s mortal remains to MB Bhavan on Tuesday morning. His body would remain there until the afternoon for admirers and others to pay their respects.
Supporters, farmers and representatives of farmers’ organisations were expected to pay homage. Malla Reddy had remained associated with farmers’ movements for several decades.
His activities extended beyond agricultural issues to irrigation, drinking water and displacement-related struggles. He participated directly on several occasions in movements concerning Bhuvanagiri district.
Farmers and organisations associated with agricultural movements mourned the veteran leader’s death. They expressed condolences following the death of Sarampally Malla Reddy at 88.
