Hyderabad: Traffic police have started cracking down on motorists violating rules by driving on the wrong route to avoid taking U-turns.
Officials are deploying special automatic cameras at busy junctions in Hyderabad and other major cities across the state.
The new system identifies vehicles travelling in the wrong direction without requiring traffic personnel to manually capture photographs.
Authorities said the automatic cameras record photographs and videos of traffic violations and generate challans based on vehicle registration numbers.
Wrong-route driving violations trigger automatic challans
Officials said motorists caught violating rules through the automated system would receive challans amounting to Rs 1,235, including user charges.
Police have already introduced the automatic camera system on a trial basis at several major junctions in Hyderabad.
Sources said the new technology was generating a large number of challans against motorists travelling in the wrong direction.
Traffic police introduced the system to reduce accidents caused by wrong-route driving and improve traffic regulation across the city.
Officials believe the automated challan system will bring behavioural changes among motorists and help reduce road accidents.
