Telangana small irrigation system needs overhaul, commission tells Revanth Reddy
Hyderabad: The Telangana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission recommended rebuilding the small irrigation system with technology units to improve water-use efficiency.
A delegation led by Commission chairman M. Kodanda Reddy met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at his Jubilee Hills residence. The delegation also submitted its report.
Commission members Ramulu Naik, Ram Reddy Gopal Reddy, Gangadhar and Bhavani Reddy accompanied the chairman.
The commission made several recommendations to improve irrigation facilities across Telangana. In particular, it proposed command-area-based management systems linking small and major irrigation resources.
The report also called for a dedicated small irrigation law to protect tanks. Further, it recommended immediately identifying Full Tank Level boundaries and removing encroachments.
The commission said tank restoration was essential for water security, agricultural stability and rural livelihoods in Telangana.
Small irrigation system plan focuses on farm resilience
Revanth Reddy discussed the commission’s recommendations with its members. During the meeting, he asked the panel to focus on crop diversification, expanding horticulture cultivation and promoting Farmer Producer Organisations.
The delegation also briefed the Chief Minister on the commission’s work during the past two years. It presented details of recommendations submitted to the government during this period.
Meanwhile, the small irrigation system report stressed better water-use efficiency through technology-based units. It also proposed improved coordination between irrigation resources through command-area management.
Tank protection formed another major part of the recommendations. Accordingly, the commission called for clear FTL demarcation and immediate action against encroachments.
The panel said tank restoration would strengthen water security and support agricultural stability. It also linked tank revival with the development of rural livelihoods.
Finally, the delegation explained the commission’s activities and recommendations to the Chief Minister. Revanth Reddy expressed satisfaction with the commission’s performance.
