Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has asked the Election Commission of India to extend the Telangana SIR claims deadline by four weeks.

In a letter to the ECI on Saturday, Revanth Reddy also sought more time for publishing the final electoral rolls under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision.

The Chief Minister raised concerns over 73.39 lakh voter entries classified as Absent, Shifted, Dead and Duplicate (ASDD).

He said the classification could include voters who had temporarily moved away from their usual residences. Such cases, he noted, could result in voters being treated as permanently shifted.

Revanth Reddy said voters needed adequate time to respond to notices and establish their eligibility. He stressed that authorities should ensure eligible voters did not lose their names from the electoral rolls inadvertently.

Therefore, he urged the ECI to extend the period for filing claims and objections by another four weeks.

Telangana SIR claims period faces request for extension

The ECI had earlier revised the SIR schedule in Telangana. The enumeration exercise continued until August 3, while officials scheduled publication of the draft electoral rolls for August 10.

Under the current schedule, the Telangana SIR claims and objections period runs from August 10 to September 9. The ECI has scheduled publication of the final electoral rolls for October 12.

Revanth Reddy has now sought extensions for both stages. He cited the large number of ASDD entries and the need to give voters sufficient opportunity to respond.

The Chief Minister specifically asked the ECI to provide additional time for voters to submit claims and objections. He also requested an extension of the final electoral roll publication deadline.

The request comes during the ongoing scrutiny of electoral roll entries under the SIR exercise. The Chief Minister stressed the need to protect the names of all eligible voters during the revision.
