Hyderabad: Telangana fertilizer consumption fell during the Kharif season, with urea purchases declining by 35,000 tonnes from the previous season. Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Tuesday attributed the reduction to app-based distribution and tighter monitoring.
Tummala said urea purchases stood at 9.44 lakh tonnes in Kharif 2026-27. In comparison, farmers purchased 9.79 lakh tonnes during the 2025-26 Kharif season. Urea purchases had stood at 9.66 lakh tonnes during Kharif 2024-25. The consumption of other fertilizers also varied during the three-year period, he said.
The minister said the government had successfully managed fertilizer distribution across Telangana during the latest Kharif season. Improved stock availability and digital monitoring helped prevent shortages, hoarding and black marketing, he added.
He said the government had positioned fertilizer stocks across the state before the Kharif season began. In addition, special officers were appointed at ports to coordinate fertilizer imports with the Centre. Those officials also worked to ensure speedy transportation of imported fertilizers to Telangana, according to the minister.
Telangana fertilizer consumption monitored through apps
Tummala said Telangana had effectively implemented the Central Government’s fertilizer app. The system monitored fertilizer stocks, bookings and purchases in real time. He said the state’s Urea App had earlier helped curb illegal hoarding and black marketing. According to Tummala, that initiative paved the way for the Centre to introduce the National Fertilizer App on a wider scale.
For Kharif 2026, 33.39 lakh farmers registered through the app. They booked 142.08 lakh bags of fertilizers and purchased 128.18 lakh bags, he said. Meanwhile, 37.48 lakh QR codes were generated through the Central Government’s Fertilizer Facilitation System. Farmers booked 141.88 lakh bags through the system and purchased 104.99 lakh bags.
Tummala said digital distribution had helped lower Telangana fertilizer consumption while restricting illegal diversion. In particular, urea consumption declined by 35,000 tonnes compared with the previous Kharif season.
The minister also said fertilizer stocks in Telangana were at comfortable levels. The state had 2.33 lakh tonnes of urea available at present. By comparison, Telangana had only 50,000 tonnes of urea during the corresponding period last year, he said.
