Crime rate down 2.33% in Telangana, law and order under control: DGP Shivadhar Reddy

Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police Shivadhar Reddy on Tuesday said law and order in the State remained under control, with the overall crime rate falling by 2.33% compared to last year.

Releasing the Telangana Police Annual Report–2025, the DGP said the State recorded 2,28,269 cases this year, down from 2,34,158 cases in 2024. He added that cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) also declined by 1.45%, from 1,69,477 to 1,67,018.

He said the conviction rate improved by 3.09% during the year. It rose from 35.63% last year to 38.72% in 2025. Courts awarded death sentences in four cases, while 320 accused received life imprisonment in 216 cases.

Maoist surrenders, cyber crime recovery and policing outcomes

The DGP said 509 Maoists surrendered during the year, including 23 from Telangana. He also noted that cyber crime cases dropped by 3% in the State, even as such offences rose sharply at the national level.

He said Telangana led the country in mobile phone recovery, with police tracing an average of 111 phones every day. Cyber crime recoveries rose by 23%, with ₹246 crore recovered. Police also refunded ₹159.65 crore to 24,498 victims.

Shivadhar Reddy said murders declined by 8.76%, rapes by 13.45%, robberies by 27% and theft cases by 9.1%. However, breach of trust cases increased by 23%.

Under the POCSO Act, courts awarded life imprisonment to 154 accused in 141 cases. They also imposed death sentences in three cases. In cases registered under the SC/ST Act, courts sentenced 53 accused to life imprisonment in 28 cases.

The DGP said Telangana Police efficiently handled major events during the year. These included village panchayat elections, the Miss World contest, an international programme involving footballer Lionel Messi, and floods in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. He said police action prevented any loss of life.

He added that women officers now hold key positions in the department. Telangana Police also secured 18 medals at the 68th All India Police Duty Meet in Jharkhand. In addition, the force won 10 medals at the World Police and Fire Games.
