Cabinet clears early municipal elections, approves key projects at Medaram meet

Hyderabad: The Telangana Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy decided to conduct municipal elections at the earliest for urban local bodies whose terms have expired.

Accordingly, the Cabinet resolved to hold elections for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations across the State. In addition, the decision covers 2,996 wards and divisions under these local bodies. Ministers said the government intended to complete the polls without delay.

Moreover, the Cabinet noted that the Dedication Commission had already submitted its report and finalised reservations. At the same time, it reviewed the February festival calendar, including Ramzan and Shivaratri. Further, it took into account that student examinations would begin later in the month. Therefore, the Cabinet felt that early municipal elections were necessary.

Cabinet takes key decisions at historic Medaram meeting

For the first time, the State Cabinet met outside Hyderabad at Medaram, near the Sammakka–Saralamma shrine. During the meeting, the Cabinet approved ₹143 crore to ensure continuous water flow in Jampanna Vagu. Specifically, the plan involves lifting Godavari water from the Ramappa and Laknavaram reservoirs.

Additionally, the Cabinet cleared the Potlapur Lift Irrigation Project in the Mulugu district. Under this project, water will be lifted from Ramappa Cheruvu to supply five villages. It will also fill 30 tanks and irrigate 7,500 acres.

Meanwhile, to support the long-term development of Medaram, the Cabinet decided to acquire another 20–21 acres of land. It noted that 19 acres had already been acquired. Therefore, it stressed the need for future-ready facilities at the pilgrimage site.

Further, the Cabinet resolved to organise the Godavari Pushkaralu, scheduled from July 27 to August 3, 2027, on a grand scale. Consequently, it approved the appointment of a consultancy to prepare an integrated plan for temple development and eco-tourism from Basar to Bhadrachalam. A Cabinet sub-committee will examine the report by March 31.

On urban infrastructure, the Cabinet discussed the takeover of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited from L&T in detail. As a result, it decided to speed up the process. Simultaneously, it approved ₹2,787 crore for land acquisition related to Metro Phase-2 A and B extensions. It also cleared the construction of a new 9-km road from the Integrated Command and Control Centre to Shilpa Layout.

In the education sector, the Cabinet approved the establishment of a law college under Mahatma Gandhi University in Nalgonda district.

After the meeting, Ministers Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Seethakka briefed the media on the Cabinet’s decisions.
