Hyderabad: BRS leader and former minister Harish Rao secured major relief in the phone tapping case on Monday after the Supreme Court dismissed petitions filed by the Telangana government challenging the quashing of proceedings against him.
A bench led by Justice B.V. Nagarathna rejected two Special Leave Petitions filed by the state government against Harish Rao and former DCP Radhakishan Rao. The bench upheld the earlier Telangana High Court order that had quashed the FIR registered against both accused.
The Supreme Court made it clear that it saw no reason to interfere with the High Court’s decision. Accordingly, the bench dismissed the petitions and confirmed the relief granted earlier.
Supreme Court upholds High Court order in phone tapping case
With the dismissal of the petitions, Harish Rao effectively walked free from the phone tapping case. BRS leaders described the verdict as a significant victory and said it vindicated their stand.
Party leaders alleged that the Congress-led government had filed cases with political vendetta. They claimed the Supreme Court verdict exposed what they termed misuse of power by the state.
Meanwhile, the Congress government has not issued any official response to the Supreme Court’s ruling so far.
