Hyderabad: Gopalapuram police raided a facility operating under the name Indian Sperm Tech in Secunderabad and uncovered what they suspect to be an illegal sperm collection racket, detaining the owner Pankaj Patel and a manager for questioning.
Acting on local complaints, police teams accompanied by forensic experts from the CLUES unit seized documents listing dozens of sperm and egg donors. The facility, initially introduced to area residents as a blood collection centre, displayed signage identifying it as a “Sperm Collection Center” inside.
Eyewitnesses said eight nurses and four other employees were present during the raid, allegedly collecting sperm samples from donors. First-time donors received ₹500, second-time donors ₹600, with higher payouts for frequent contributors. Samples were stored in cooling drums and reportedly dispatched within 48 hours.
The operation is believed to have been running for at least two months. Residents said they were misled about the nature of the centre. “We were told it was a sample collection lab. No one mentioned sperm banking,” said a neighbouring shopkeeper.
Police are now examining the legality of the licences, the qualifications of the operators, and the end use of the biological material. Officials said they are investigating whether the facility had approval to handle reproductive samples and whether any medical or legal protocols were violated.
