Hyderabad: Telangana Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Monday declared that no encroachment would be tolerated on Housing Board lands. He said the government will enforce strict measures to safeguard these public assets.
At a review meeting held at the state Secretariat, the Minister directed officials to prepare a detailed action plan. The meeting focused on lease renewals, rent arrears, legal disputes, and the management of commercial properties.
Minister reviews leases, rent dues, and shop regularisation
Officials briefed the Minister that 115 institutions have held Housing Board leases since the Nizam era. These include residential, educational, commercial, and religious bodies. Seven of these properties are either in court disputes or owe large sums in unpaid rent.
To resolve pending issues, Ponguleti ordered notices to be issued to institutions that failed to renew leases. He also asked officials to offer regularisation where applicable, especially for long-standing occupants.
Reviewing 301 commercial shops under the Housing Board, the Minister expressed concern over crores of rupees in rent arrears. He said these dues accumulated due to the non-enforcement of annual rent hikes. As a solution, he suggested selling shops at market value to current occupants or auctioning shops deemed unsuitable for public use.
Additionally, Ponguleti proposed regularising and selling adjacent plots below 100 square yards to eligible Housing Board allottees. He advised officials to gather updated data on market values, unregistered plots, and pending requests for adjacent land.
He said a final decision would follow after Cabinet-level discussions.
Housing Board MD V.P. Gautam, Chief Engineer Venkata Ramana Reddy, and other senior officials participated in the meeting.
