Hyderabad: Revenue, Housing, Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy on Friday announced that the State Government will construct one lakh Indiramma houses in the CURE area on high-value government land and provide ownership rights to beneficiaries, with a special focus on women.
The Minister said the government would build the houses near the locations where poor families currently reside to ensure that their livelihoods are not disrupted. He added that the programme would cover both Low-Income Group (LIG) and Middle-Income Group (MIG) beneficiaries.
Reviewing the implementation of Indiramma housing in the CURE area at the Secretariat, Ponguleti directed officials to prepare an action plan for the large-scale housing programme.
He said the government had already granted administrative approval for 3.50 lakh houses during the 2026-27 financial year. Of these, one lakh Indiramma houses will come up in the CURE area, while another 2.50 lakh houses will be constructed in other regions of the State.
One lakh Indiramma houses to support livelihoods
The Minister said the government had decided to avoid mistakes made in previous housing programmes. He criticised the previous administration for constructing double-bedroom houses 30 to 40 kilometres away from Hyderabad without considering the livelihood needs of poor families.
According to him, many daily wage earners and small traders depended on employment opportunities within the city. Consequently, several families found it difficult to relocate to distant housing colonies.
He said the relocation created challenges related to employment, education, healthcare and transportation. As a result, many beneficiaries showed little interest in occupying those houses, leaving several units vacant and underutilised.
Therefore, the present government plans to construct one lakh Indiramma houses in areas close to where beneficiaries already live. The Minister said this approach would help families maintain their livelihoods while enjoying better housing facilities.
One lakh Indiramma houses to strengthen women’s ownership
Ponguleti said the government would use valuable government land for the housing programme and make beneficiaries stakeholders in those properties. He added that ownership rights would primarily benefit women from poor families.
The Minister said granting housing ownership to women would strengthen their economic and social security. Moreover, home ownership would contribute to women’s empowerment, family stability and the long-term development of future generations.
He also instructed officials to design houses according to the needs of beneficiaries. Furthermore, he directed them to ensure that each housing unit has a minimum built-up area of 400 square feet.
The Minister emphasised that the housing designs should provide comfort and convenience while meeting the aspirations of low-income families.
Housing Secretary V.P. Gautham and other officials attended the review meeting.
