Malkajgiri Traffic Police book 227 drunk driving offenders

Hyderabad: Malkajgiri Traffic Police booked 227 drunk driving offenders during a special weekend enforcement drive conducted across the commissionerate limits.

Police said the cases included 185 two-wheelers, 12 three-wheelers, 29 four-wheelers, and one heavy vehicle. All the drunk driving offenders will be produced before the court for further legal action.

According to officials, 197 offenders recorded Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Another 20 offenders registered BAC levels ranging from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml.

Police also detected 10 offenders with BAC levels above 300 mg/100 ml during the enforcement drive. Authorities said the special checks were part of ongoing measures to curb drunken driving and improve road safety.

Courts penalise drunk driving offenders in Malkajgiri

Malkajgiri Police warned that driving under the influence of alcohol remained a serious criminal offence. Officials stated that anyone causing a fatal accident while driving in an intoxicated condition would face charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Police said the offence carries a maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment along with a fine.

Meanwhile, officials revealed that courts disposed of 293 drunk driving cases between May 17 and May 23. Among them, 11 persons received jail sentences along with fines, while two offenders were ordered to pay fines and perform social service.

The remaining 280 offenders were penalised with fines only, police added.
