KTR to receive Green Leadership Award 2025 in New York

Hyderabad: BRS working president and former minister K.T. Rama Rao has been chosen for the prestigious Green Leadership Award 2025. The honour will be presented in New York later this month, recognising his leadership in sustainable governance and his role in transforming Telangana’s environmental landscape.

The award ceremony will take place on September 24 at the 9th NYC Green School Conference. The event will bring together leaders and institutions from across the globe who have advanced sustainability and climate resilience. Organisers Green Mentors confirmed KTR’s selection in an official communication. His name now joins an exclusive list of global leaders who shaped policies for greener and more liveable cities.

Telangana’s green transformation under KTR

During his tenure as Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, KTR spearheaded some of Telangana’s most ambitious ecological programmes. The state launched a massive plantation drive, targeting 10 crore saplings, while Hyderabad saw the creation of 977 parks under GHMC limits. Additionally, the city gained 108 lung spaces, new theme parks, rain gardens, vertical gardens, and extensive avenue plantations. These efforts made Hyderabad a model for green urban governance.

The results of these initiatives attracted international recognition. Hyderabad won the World Green Cities Award and became the only Indian city to be recognised as a Tree City of the World by the Arbor Day Foundation and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Telangana as a whole improved its green cover significantly, rising from 24% to 33% during the tenure of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. This expansion reinforced Telangana’s position as a frontrunner in climate-resilient growth.

KTR’s recognition with the Green Leadership Award highlights Telangana’s achievements in ecological conservation and environmental reform. The award also reinforces the state’s role as a national benchmark for urban sustainability, blending community involvement, public policy, and innovative governance. With this honour, KTR stands alongside international leaders who continue to prove that growth and sustainability can move forward together.
