Hyderabad: Telangana Rakshana Sena president Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Sunday demanded constable legal action over allegedly objectionable Facebook comments against her. She said suspension alone was inadequate and sought action in accordance with the law.
Speaking to the media at the party office in Banjara Hills, Kavitha questioned the police response to the alleged remarks. She said derogatory comments against women could attract imprisonment of up to three years. However, she said the constable concerned had only faced suspension.
Kavitha warned that she would bring “international-level embarrassment” to the government if authorities failed to take legal action. Kavitha questioned the Director General of Police over what she described as inadequate action in the case.
“If someone makes similar comments against the DGP’s two daughters-in-law, will he remain silent? DGP, what is your responsibility? Where is your sensitivity? If you cannot protect a woman like me, how will you protect ordinary women?” she asked.
Kavitha said women had faced highly abusive trolling on social media in recent times. Moreover, she alleged that police had failed to act against those responsible. She maintained that constable legal action should follow the applicable law rather than stop with departmental suspension.
Constable legal action row widens into criticism of DGP
Kavitha also targeted Director General of Police C.V. Anand over the law and order situation in Telangana. She alleged that the State’s crime rate had increased since Anand took charge as DGP.
Additionally, Kavitha referred to reported remarks by the DGP during his visit to Khammam. According to her, Anand had said ganja consumption increased following the decline of Naxalism.
Kavitha questioned whether such a statement was appropriate for a senior police officer. Meanwhile, she continued to link her criticism of the police leadership to its handling of alleged abuse against women on social media.
Kavitha also raised the issue of Telangana activists and promises allegedly made before the elections. She alleged that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had sought the support of Telangana activists before the polls. According to Kavitha, he had also promised justice to them after coming to power.
However, she claimed the Congress government had failed to fulfil its assurances to the families of Telangana activists even after nearly three years. Therefore, Kavitha demanded immediate implementation of those assurances. She also sought delivery of the benefits allegedly promised to the activists and their families.
Her remarks combined the constable legal action demand with criticism of the police response to online abuse and the government’s handling of Telangana activists.
