HMWSSB fines Jubilee Hills resident Rs 20,000 for drinking water misuse

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) imposed a Rs 20,000 fine on a Jubilee Hills consumer for drinking water misuse. Officials found the consumer using potable water to clean floors.

The inspection took place at Road No. 23 in Jubilee Hills. Officials identified the consumer as Poornima and found her using drinking water for floor cleaning.

The HMWSSB expressed concern over the wastage of potable water for cleaning roads and floors. It said the misuse was unacceptable at a time when people were facing water shortages.

Meanwhile, HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy warned that officials would take strict action against anyone who misused drinking water. He urged residents to use potable water responsibly and avoid using it for other purposes.

Drinking water misuse checks to be intensified

Officials said HMWSSB would intensify inspections to prevent water wastage. Whenever teams identify drinking water misuse, they will impose fines according to the rules.

The HMWSSB also asked residents to report cases of water misuse. Complaints can be sent through its WhatsApp number, 99499 30003.

Officials stressed that water remained essential for life. Although water covers much of the earth, only a small share is suitable for drinking, the department said.

Rising population, pollution and climate change were reducing freshwater resources, according to the awareness message issued by the department. It also warned that everyday habits could waste large quantities of water.

For instance, leaving taps running while brushing or washing utensils can waste water. Ignoring leaks can also contribute to unnecessary water loss.

The department urged residents to use only the water they need. It also encouraged households to install rainwater harvesting pits to send rainwater into the ground.

The HMWSSB said protecting every drop of drinking water was a shared responsibility. It urged people to conserve water for future generations.
