Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed civic authorities to enforce the mandatory use of treated water for non-drinking purposes across Greater Hyderabad from November 1.
During a review meeting on Wednesday, October 28, the Chief Minister issued instructions to improve sewage treatment plant (STP) operations. He also reviewed the supply and utilisation of treated water across the city.
Officials were directed to supply treated water for landscaping at government offices, including the State Secretariat and the Chief Minister’s camp office. The instructions also covered road cleaning along the Outer Ring Road (ORR), public parks and data centres.
Furthermore, Revanth Reddy directed authorities to incorporate the mandatory use of treated water for non-potable purposes into the building permit approval process.
Mandatory use of treated water to be monitored through AI
The Chief Minister instructed officials to improve STP operations through artificial intelligence (AI) technology. He also ordered the appointment of a special officer to monitor treated water quality.
Additionally, he directed authorities to connect all sewage treatment plants to the command and control centre for monitoring. Revanth Reddy sought details of the water requirements of the Railways and Metro Rail. He instructed the departments concerned to ensure treated water met their non-drinking needs.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister called for extensive public awareness campaigns to encourage the use of treated water. He directed officials to establish a toll-free number to address public enquiries and requests.
He also ordered the development of a tracking system for tankers transporting treated water. Furthermore, he empowered HYDRAA to monitor sewage treatment plants.
Solar energy proposed for sewage treatment plants
With electricity demand rising, Revanth Reddy instructed officials to examine the feasibility of operating STPs using solar energy. He also directed authorities to involve private agencies in establishing sewage treatment plants.
During the meeting, Water Board officials briefed the Chief Minister on the availability of drinking water in Hyderabad. Following the briefing, Revanth Reddy instructed officials to prepare plans based on future drinking water requirements. He also directed them to take preventive measures against potential shortages.
The Chief Minister stressed continuous monitoring of fresh water supplies to ensure uninterrupted availability. The directions on the mandatory use of treated water formed part of the review of sewage treatment operations and water management across Greater Hyderabad.
