Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) dismissed a fake water supply warning circulating on social media. The message claimed that the city’s reservoirs would dry up by November because of El Niño and drought conditions.
The board clarified that it had not issued any advisory predicting the depletion of reservoirs or restrictions on drinking-water supplies. It also rejected claims that Hyderabad could face severely limited water availability or a complete suspension of supply.
HMWSSB rejects fake water supply warning
The circulating message falsely presented itself as an official communication from HMWSSB and urged residents to restrict water consumption. It claimed that most reservoirs supplying Hyderabad would run dry by the end of November. Consequently, residents could face severe water shortages or a complete disruption of supply, according to the message.
The message also contained purported instructions restricting the use of running water for washing vehicles, cleaning ramps and maintaining roads. Additionally, it advised residents to adopt water-saving practices and suggested that the board would take action against violations.
However, HMWSSB clarified that the message did not originate from the water board. The board stated that claims concerning reservoir levels and possible restrictions or suspension of water supply were not official announcements.
Citizens urged to ignore fake water supply warning
HMWSSB advised residents against believing or forwarding unverified messages about Hyderabad’s drinking-water situation. Instead, it urged citizens to rely exclusively on official communications from the board for information about reservoir conditions and water supply.
The clarification followed the circulation of the misleading message linking an anticipated drought and El Niño conditions to an alleged water supply crisis in Hyderabad. The board maintained that it had issued no such warning about reservoirs running dry by November or drinking-water supplies being suspended.
