Heavy rain lashes Hyderabad, traffic hit on Vijayawada highway

Hyderabad: Heavy rain lashed Hyderabad on Thursday evening, flooding several parts of the city and throwing traffic out of gear. Roads across multiple localities turned into streams, making travel extremely difficult for commuters. Waterlogging also triggered power disruptions in a few areas, adding to the chaos.

Rainfall was particularly severe in Hayathnagar, Pedda Amberpet, and Abdullapurmet on the city’s outskirts. Ramoji Film City reported an unrelenting downpour, with showers continuing for hours without a break. Many residents struggled to move through waist-deep water in some lanes.

Traffic slows, rainfall intensifies in multiple areas

Heavy showers pounded L.B. Nagar, Bhagyalatha, and Vanasthalipuram, leading to severe waterlogging. On the Hyderabad–Vijayawada highway, rainwater rose to knee level, forcing vehicles to move at a crawl. Long queues stretched for kilometres, and stranded passengers waited anxiously as police tried to regulate traffic and ease the congestion.

Reports showed that Hayathnagar, Vanasthalipuram, and Kuntluru recorded 100 mm of rainfall by 4 p.m. Moderate showers hit L.B. Nagar, Nagole, Boduppal, Nacharam, Mallapur, Kapra, Moula Ali, ECIL, and Nagaram. Residents in low-lying zones faced the risk of flooding, and emergency teams stayed on alert.

Weather officials warned that more heavy rainfall was likely in the next few hours. They advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, especially on highways, and to stay indoors wherever possible. The alert raised concerns of further flooding in low-lying residential areas, where drainage systems already struggled to cope with the excess water.
