Hyderabad: Padma Shri awardee and noted handloom artisan Gajam Anjaiah urged the Telangana government to provide handloom shawls to devotees at major temples across the state instead of shawls made from synthetic yarn.
Anjaiah submitted a representation to Forests, Environment and Endowments Minister Konda Surekha during a meeting at her residence in Jubilee Hills.
He requested the government to encourage the exclusive use of handloom shawls made from pure cotton or silk at major temples, including Yadadri, Bhadrachalam, Basara and Vemulawada.
Handloom shawls temples proposal highlights environmental concerns
During the meeting, Anjaiah explained that many temples currently distribute shawls manufactured in mills and power looms using synthetic yarn.
He argued that continuing the use of synthetic products was inconsistent with efforts to promote environmental protection. He noted that temples were discouraging plastic usage while still distributing synthetic textile products.
According to Anjaiah, handloom shawls made from natural cotton and silk would enhance the spiritual and cultural significance of temple offerings.
He also said such a move would support traditional weaving practices and create sustainable employment opportunities for thousands of handloom workers across Telangana.
Handloom shawls temples initiative receives positive response
Anjaiah urged the government to formulate a policy encouraging the use of handloom-produced sacred shawls in all major temples.
Minister Konda Surekha responded positively to the proposal and appreciated Anjaiah’s efforts to promote the handloom sector.
She said handloom workers played an invaluable role in preserving Indian traditions while also contributing to environmental protection.
The Minister observed that promoting handloom shawls in temples would help protect cultural heritage and strengthen the livelihoods of weavers.
She assured Anjaiah that the government would examine the proposal, assess its feasibility and consider appropriate measures to support the handloom sector.
Konda Surekha also reiterated that the Congress government under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy remained committed to the welfare of handloom workers and the development of the handloom industry.
Several representatives from the handloom sector attended the meeting.
