Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a pioneering initiative to provide children of the city’s sanitation workers with a first-hand experience of one of India’s leading educational institutions. For the first time, students from classes 6 to 10 across GHMC circles will visit the IIT Hyderabad campus on January 31. This marks the first time that IIT Hyderabad host sanitation workers’ children for such an event.
The initiative, spearheaded by GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, aims to inspire these children by exposing them to an academic environment typically beyond their reach. The programme includes guided visits to libraries, innovation centres, and academic blocks. Additionally, it features interactive sessions with IIT faculty and students. Notably, this is the first time IIT Hyderabad host sanitation workers’ families as part of a guided educational visit.

GHMC has partnered with IIT Hyderabad’s E-Cell to organise the event. IIT Hyderabad host sanitation workers’ children by ensuring full logistical support such as transportation, meals, safety arrangements, and on-site mentoring.
Commissioner Karnan directed officials to execute the programme in a way that makes each child feel welcomed and valued. “Our sanitation workers are the backbone of Hyderabad. Through this initiative, we want to tell their children that their future is just as important as anyone else’s,” he said. Furthermore, this initiative where IIT Hyderabad host sanitation workers’ children aims to set a benchmark for social inclusion across other institutions.
According to GHMC officials, the initiative reflects the corporation’s commitment to social inclusion. It does so by offering underprivileged children a glimpse into academic excellence and the possibility of upward mobility. Officials emphasised that the visit is intended not only as a tour, but as a motivation-building exercise. It is designed to spark ambition and self-belief.
