ECI to hold national conference of State Election Commissioners

Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India will hold a national conference of State Election Commissioners (SECs) on February 24, 2026, in New Delhi.

The conference will take place at Bharat Mandapam. Accordingly, State Election Commissioners from all States and Union Territories will attend the event.

Notably, the ECI is organising the national SEC conference after a gap of more than 25 years. The last such conference took place in 1999.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will chair the conference. In addition, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi will address the inaugural session.

State Election Commissioners will attend the conference along with legal and technical experts. Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officers from 36 States and Union Territories will also participate in the discussions.

The main objective of the conference is to strengthen coordination between the Election Commission of India and State Election Commissions. In particular, the focus will remain on election processes and logistics within their respective legal frameworks.

Participants will discuss election laws related to voter eligibility in States and Union Territories. At the same time, they will deliberate on the ECINET digital platform, electronic voting machines and other election systems led by the ECI.

Further, the ECI will share its experience in preparing electoral rolls and conducting elections under the Constitution and statutory framework. Through this, it will extend its institutional expertise to State Election Commissions.

State Election Commissions came into existence through State laws under the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments. As a result, these commissions hold full powers of supervision, control and direction over electoral rolls and elections to panchayats and municipal bodies.

Finally, the Election Commission of India said the conference would help build stronger institutional coordination across election authorities in the country.
