Ramchander Rao says criticism of SIR after poll losses harms democracy

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao criticised the Congress for linking electoral defeats to the Special Intensive Revision process, saying such allegations were politically motivated and harmful to democratic institutions.

Addressing the issue in Karimnagar on Saturday, Rao responded to remarks made by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and defended the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls. He said the exercise was a constitutional process conducted by the Election Commission of India and had judicial backing.

Rao alleged that the Congress questioned electoral mechanisms only after suffering defeats while remaining silent following electoral victories. He argued that political parties should support institutional processes instead of casting doubts on them after unfavourable results.

Special Intensive Revision backed as constitutional exercise

The BJP leader said voter roll verification had already covered nearly 57 crore voters across the country. He added that another 37 crore voters were currently undergoing verification under the Special Intensive Revision process.

According to Rao, all political parties participate in the exercise through their Booth Level Agents. Therefore, he urged parties to cooperate with election authorities to ensure accurate and updated voter lists.

He also called for vigilance against the inclusion of illegal foreign nationals in electoral rolls. Rao said maintaining the integrity of voter lists was essential for protecting the democratic process.
