Hyderabad: The Congress party stepped up preparations for the upcoming municipal elections in Telangana, with the TPCC set to hold an expanded executive meeting today (Thursday) at Gandhi Bhavan to shape its election strategy.
TPCC chief Mahesh Kumar Goud will chair the meeting. AICC in-charge general secretary Meenakshi Natarajan, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, and AICC secretaries will attend. Party leaders said the leadership will focus mainly on planning for the municipal elections, where Congress aims to secure a clean sweep.
Party sources said leaders will also take up protest programmes called by the AICC. These programmes oppose the renaming of the employment guarantee scheme and the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name. Leaders said both issues will receive focused attention during the meeting.
Congress to shape ward-level approach for municipal elections
The meeting follows a review of the recent panchayat elections, in which Congress won a sizeable number of sarpanch posts. However, party leaders said the BRS delivered a stronger performance than expected. As a result, the ruling party has stayed alert ahead of the municipal polls.
To deny rivals any advantage, Congress plans a detailed election roadmap. First, the party will prepare a list of six potential candidates from each ward and division. Then, it will conduct surveys to identify the most suitable candidates based on public feedback and performance.
Leaders will also discuss agitation plans linked to the employment guarantee scheme, in line with AICC directions. In addition, the party will draw up steps to counter opposition allegations related to Krishna and Godavari river water issues.
Party leaders said they will guide the cadre to take to the public the points earlier shared through PowerPoint presentations in the Assembly. Meanwhile, the TPCC has directed DCC chiefs to submit district executive committee lists by today. Sources said this move will streamline district units. The Congress will appoint mandal presidents on January 15.
