Hyderabad, January 26: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, speaking at the inauguration of a new Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue at the Ambedkar Open University, strongly criticised the Central Government’s approach towards university autonomy and Padma Awards distribution. He emphasised the importance of safeguarding state rights and preserving the integrity of educational institutions.
Addressing the audience, the Chief Minister said it was unfortunate that discussions about protecting the Constitution were still necessary in today’s India. He lauded the role of the Ambedkar Open University as more than just an institution for certificates, urging it to address societal issues and contribute to the welfare of the public.
He praised former leaders like P.V. Narasimha Rao for their vision in establishing universities that empower marginalised communities. Stressing the need for strengthening universities, the CM announced that the state government had appointed vice-chancellors and was actively working to fill vacant teaching and non-teaching posts.
Criticising the Centre’s interference in university governance through changes to UGC regulations, he called these actions a threat to state autonomy. “Attempts to shift control over universities to the Centre will only lead to cultural and administrative disruptions,” he remarked, adding that any such move would face strong resistance from Telangana.
The Chief Minister also expressed dissatisfaction with the Central Government for overlooking deserving Telangana personalities like Gaddar, Chukka Ramaiah, Andesri, Gorati Venkanna, and Jayadheer Tirumala Rao in the recent Padma Awards list. He termed this neglect an injustice and announced plans to write a formal letter to the Prime Minister to highlight the issue.
Concluding his speech, he called for intellectuals to unite in protecting the Constitution and ensuring that universities remain spaces for empowerment rather than platforms for propaganda. He affirmed that Telangana would stand firm in resisting any actions that undermine state rights or the constitutional spirit.
