Hyderabad: Urea shortage in Telangana triggered protests by BRS MLAs in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, with members demanding an immediate discussion on the difficulties faced by farmers.
Holding placards inside the Assembly premises, the BRS legislators accused the Congress government of failing to ensure urea availability. The placards read slogans such as “Urea not available in shops, is it available only in apps?” and “Congress came, urea shortage followed.” The MLAs also raised slogans against the government.
Police stopped the BRS MLAs from entering the House with placards and asked them to remove the protest material. This led to heated arguments between the legislators and security personnel at the Assembly entrance.
Harish Rao leads BRS protest over urea shortage
Senior BRS leader Harish Rao accused the government of ignoring farmers’ problems. He said farmers would get urea only if opposition leaders raised the issue, just as employees received surrender leave payments after protests.
Harish Rao demanded a detailed discussion in the Assembly on the urea shortage. He said farmers across the state were suffering due to poor supply during the cropping season.
Following the protest, BRS MLAs submitted an adjournment motion seeking an immediate debate on the urea shortage. They urged the Speaker to allow a discussion on the issue without delay, citing the hardship faced by farmers.
The ruling Congress government did not immediately respond to the protest or the adjournment motion.
