Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi on Monday lodged a complaint with the Telangana State Election Commission at Vikarabad, alleging that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy violated the Model Code of Conduct during the ongoing municipal elections.
According to the BRS, the Chief Minister misused an official government programme, “Praja Palana–Pragati Bata”, for political purposes even though the Model Code of Conduct was in force. The party alleged that the government event effectively turned into a Congress campaign.
The programme involved cheque distribution under bank linkage and Stree Nidhi assistance. As many as 6,650 women self-help groups received benefits at the event. Therefore, the BRS argued that the official setting barred any form of political appeal.
Party leaders alleged that Revanth Reddy openly asked beneficiaries to vote for the Congress party. They said he urged people to ensure the party’s victory in the municipal elections.
Model Code of Conduct complaint seeks SEC inquiry
According to the complaint, organisers compelled beneficiaries to raise their hands and chant political slogans such as “Jai Congress”. As a result, the BRS said the programme amounted to direct electioneering from a State platform.
Further, the party alleged that the Chief Minister exploited the presence of economically vulnerable welfare beneficiaries to exert political pressure. In addition, it said such conduct violated Model Code of Conduct provisions that prohibit the use of official position, public funds, and government machinery for campaigning.
The BRS said these actions undermined the level playing field and weakened public confidence in free and fair elections. Moreover, it warned that repeated violations by constitutional authorities diluted the authority of the Election Commission.
Therefore, seeking immediate intervention, the BRS urged the State Election Commission to take cognisance of the complaint. It demanded a detailed inquiry, including scrutiny of video footage and official records, and sought strict action under the Model Code of Conduct and relevant election laws.
Finally, the party requested clear directions to prevent further misuse of government programmes during the election period.
