270 drunk drivers jailed, police to inform offenders’ offices and colleges

Hyderabad: Hyderabad traffic police intensified enforcement against incidents of drunk driving, leading courts to send 270 offenders to jail following a special citywide drive.

Police also decided to inform the offices and educational institutions of those convicted. The department will send letters carrying details of offenders involved in driving drunk and seek appropriate action. Consequently, the move has sparked wide discussion across the city.

The action followed a special drive conducted from December 24 to December 31, 2025. During this period, traffic police registered cases against those caught for driving under the influence of alcohol and produced them before courts for trial.

Drunk driving crackdown during special drive

After hearing the cases, courts found 270 accused guilty and imposed jail sentences. Hyderabad Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police D. Joel Davis shared the details in an official statement on Thursday, specifically referencing the crackdown on offenders caught drunk driving.

He said the department has begun notifying the workplaces and colleges of those sentenced for drunk driving related offenses. Through this step, the police aim to extend accountability beyond legal punishment.

He added that the primary objective remains road safety and accident prevention. Moreover, traffic police will continue such special drives in the coming days.

The police also warned that drunk drivers breaking the law commit a serious offence. They stressed that violators will face strict consequences if caught.
