US agency lists Hyderabad as possible location of $93 million Medicare fraud fugitive
HYDERABAD: A man wanted by US authorities over an alleged $93 million Medicare fraud case may be in Hyderabad, according to a fugitive notice issued by the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG).
The federal agency has listed “Hyderabad, India” as the possible location of Khadeer Khan Mohammed. US investigators accuse him of healthcare fraud linked to a laboratory business.
Investigators allege that Mohammed used the business to submit millions of dollars in Medicare claims for genetic tests. The tests were either ineligible for reimbursement, lacked orders from authorised medical providers, or were not provided as claimed.
The case covers alleged fraudulent billing between August 2023 and October 2024. The activity allegedly occurred in the Northern District of Texas and elsewhere.
According to HHS-OIG, Mohammed allegedly caused false Medicare claims for laboratory genetic testing. Medicare is the US government’s federal healthcare programme.
Investigators also allege that the scheme involved the unauthorised use of physicians’ personal identifying information.
The doctors allegedly had no treatment relationship with the Medicare beneficiaries named in the claims. They also did not order the genetic tests. The tests were not used to treat those beneficiaries, according to the federal agency.
Medicare allegedly paid $65 million
US authorities allege that Mohammed used American Premier to submit about $93 million in fraudulent Medicare claims.
Medicare allegedly paid at least $65 million of that amount, according to HHS-OIG.
The alleged billing reached a particularly high level during one period in 2023. HHS-OIG said Medicare paid about $13 million in suspected fraudulent claims over just 10 days.
HHS-OIG has listed Mohammed as a wanted fugitive. The agency has identified healthcare fraud as the charge and listed Hyderabad as his possible location.
The agency has also asked the public to provide information that could help authorities locate him.
According to the fugitive notice, Mohammed was born on July 5, 1980. HHS-OIG describes him as 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 170 pounds.
The agency has provided an online reporting system and a US fugitive hotline for people with information about his whereabouts.
The official notice does not say that Mohammed entered India through Hyderabad airport. It also does not mention any search operation by Hyderabad Police.
Reports published locally have included such details, but Indian authorities would need to independently confirm them before they can be treated as established facts.
HHS-OIG has also stressed that the charges remain allegations. Mohammed is presumed innocent unless and until a court proves him guilty.
