Hyderabad: The ULLAS literacy exam drew 6.32 lakh adults across Telangana on Sunday as part of the state’s adult education programme. The Education Department conducted the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy test under the ‘Ammaku Aksharamala’ initiative.
Officials had identified 7.25 lakh people for the examination across the state. Of them, 6.32 lakh adults appeared for the test conducted under Adult Education.
Women from rural areas formed the largest group among the candidates. As many as 5.32 lakh rural women appeared for the examination, while another one lakh candidates came from urban areas.
The large turnout highlighted the reach of the literacy programme among adults. Officials said the government had been conducting special training to reduce illiteracy across Telangana.
Panchayat Raj and Women and Child Welfare Minister Seethakka congratulated the learners who appeared for the examination. She said learning to read and write involved more than basic literacy and helped build self-confidence.
The minister also announced an opportunity for ULLAS literacy exam qualifiers to continue their education. Those who pass can appear for the tenth-class examinations through the Telangana Open School Society (TOS).
Admissions for the 2026-27 academic year are currently underway. Eligible candidates can apply through Meeseva, TAS Study Centers or the official website, according to the information provided by the department.
ULLAS literacy exam opens path to Class 10 studies
Candidates who qualify in the ULLAS literacy exam can pursue further education through the open-school system. The government has also made vocational courses available to eligible learners seeking additional skills.
The adult education programme aims to help people who missed formal schooling gain basic reading and writing abilities. Officials said special training remained a key part of the government’s effort to reduce illiteracy.
Meanwhile, the participation of 6.32 lakh adults in the latest examination was cited as evidence of the literacy movement’s reach. Officials said the response demonstrated the impact of efforts undertaken through the adult education programme.
The examination covered adults identified under the state’s literacy initiative. Rural women accounted for 5.32 lakh of those who appeared, while one lakh candidates from urban areas also took the test.
The government is continuing admissions for the 2026-27 academic year through the specified channels. Eligible learners can use Meeseva, TAS Study Centers or the official website to pursue Class 10 studies and vocational courses.
