Hyderabad: The Hyderabad District Revenue Authority (HYDRAA) received 41 complaints on Monday regarding alleged land encroachments across various parts of the city. Complainants reported illegal grabs involving public land, lake beds, and stormwater drains. Many cases involved forged papers and overlapping survey numbers.
Encroachers, according to locals, are targeting vacant plots by presenting false ownership claims. In several instances, they have inserted common citizens as proxies to mask the involvement of influential land grabbers. Many of the targeted lands, originally vacated during the national partition, are now under threat. Some squatters reportedly set up huts initially, only to bring in powerful interests later to secure permanent control.
Complaints cover Uppal, Gandipet, Secunderabad, and Miyapur
In Uppal, residents said that private parties had already taken over a 3.5-acre government plot. In another case, construction is underway on a 12-metre-wide stormwater drain connecting Fox Sagar to Vennela Cheruvu in Jeedimetla.
Complaints from Uppal Khalsa, under survey numbers 644 and 645, revealed that of six acres of government land, 2.5 acres were officially allocated to the Metro Rail project. However, private individuals are allegedly using 1.5 acres to collect vehicle parking fees. Locals urged the government to set up a college on the remaining land. They also objected to the ongoing construction of a seven-storey building with three cellars, which reportedly received GHMC approval despite alleged violations.
Meanwhile, in Manikonda (Gandipet mandal), residents requested immediate Full Tank Level (FTL) demarcation for Mushkin Cheruvu. They claimed unchecked construction had already begun on the lake bed across survey numbers 255, 256, and 257. Locals raised concerns over shrinking lake area, increased flood risk, ecological damage, and declining water quality.
In Secunderabad Cantonment’s Chinna Kamala locality, the Hanuman Temple Welfare & Youth Association reported the illegal takeover of a stormwater drain near Tirumalagiri Ward 7. They said encroachments had caused localised flooding. A shop previously removed from the drain area is allegedly being rebuilt.
Miyapur residents from BHEL HIG Phase-2 and Ushodaya Enclave flagged encroachment of the GHMC-owned Nandanam Tree Park (west side). Unknown individuals had begun building compound walls, trying to claim the park land.
