Hyderabad: BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao questioned the Congress government’s Telangana coal imports, alleging that cheaper Singareni coal was available for power generation. In a post on X on Tuesday, KTR questioned the rationale behind purchasing coal from abroad at around Rs 9,000 per tonne.
He claimed that Singareni Collieries Company Limited supplied coal at about Rs 3,800 per tonne for Telangana Genco power plants. Therefore, KTR alleged that choosing imported coal could impose a financial burden running into thousands of crores on the state exchequer.
He also questioned whose interests the decision served. Moreover, he described the move as “Tughlaq-esque” and alleged that vested interests influenced the policy.
Telangana coal imports questioned over Singareni supply
KTR said Telangana had substantial coal reserves and highlighted Singareni’s role in supplying the fuel. He said Singareni supplied coal to Telangana and neighbouring states. According to him, these included Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, KTR compared the Telangana coal imports policy with the approach followed by the previous BRS government. He claimed that the KCR government had effectively used domestic Singareni coal for Telangana Genco’s power generation.
According to KTR, the previous government had ensured uninterrupted power supply by relying on the state’s coal resources. In contrast, he alleged that the Congress government was choosing expensive imported coal instead of Singareni supplies.
KTR further claimed that the decision undermined Telangana’s own natural resources while increasing power generation costs.
