HYDERABAD: Telangana Legislative Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar has lauded the Union Government’s decision to conduct a nationwide caste census, describing it as a historic step towards achieving social justice for marginalised communities.
In a statement shared on social media, Kumar emphasised that the caste census would facilitate equitable representation for Dalits, Adivasis, and backward classes in education, employment, and political spheres. He asserted that aligning resource allocation and welfare schemes with actual population data would realise the vision of constitutional architect B.R. Ambedkar.
Kumar praised the Telangana government’s proactive approach under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s leadership, highlighting the state’s completion of its own caste census, setting an example for the nation. He noted that the Telangana Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution to implement 42% reservations for backward classes and expressed gratitude to Governor Jishnu Dev Varma for approving the bill and forwarding it to the President.
He also pointed out that Telangana was the first state to pass and implement a bill on Scheduled Caste classification, underscoring the government’s commitment to uplifting marginalised communities. Kumar urged the Centre to expedite the nationwide caste census to ensure timely justice for all disadvantaged groups.
The idea of Caste Census has been propelled by the Congress party’s central leadership especially by Rahul Gandhi during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. BJP and central government especially PM Modi and his cabinet ministers have mocked this idea many a times in the past. However, the BJP has to finnally announce to take up the caste census along with the regular census yielding to the Congress party’s point.
