Secunderabad Railway Station redevelopment underway at ₹714.73 crore with global standards

Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Monday inspected the ₹714.73 crore redevelopment of Secunderabad Railway Station, which aims to bring the facility up to global standards.

Construction continues without disrupting services

Accompanied by senior officials from South Central Railway, the minister examined construction activity on both sides of the station and reviewed safety systems. He emphasised that train services and station functions remained uninterrupted, even with a daily footfall of 1.97 lakh passengers and peak crowds reaching 23,000 per hour.

Highlighting the station’s legacy, Reddy noted that the British-era hub remains one of South India’s busiest terminals. He added that the makeover would give it an airport-style structure with modern facilities.

Redevelopment to feature airport-grade amenities

The upgraded station will include a double-storey sky concourse spread across three acres. This will house a waiting hall for 3,000 passengers, alongside restaurants, retail outlets, and recreation zones. Moreover, the facility will include 26 lifts, 32 escalators, two travelators, a 5000KWp solar plant, and advanced security systems.

Additionally, the project integrates a five-lakh-litre capacity sewage treatment system and rainwater harvesting pits. Walkways will link the station with adjacent metro and bus services on both flanks.

Work is progressing in phases. For instance, the multi-level parking facility is set for completion this year. Similarly, the South Side block is expected within four months. Construction on the North Side building and platform covers is also underway. The entire project is slated for completion by December 2026. Once finished, the station will accommodate 2.7 lakh passengers daily and 32,500 during peak hours.

Telangana rail infrastructure receives major boost

Reddy announced that the Union Budget has earmarked ₹5,337 crore for Telangana’s railway development in FY 2025–26. Over the last ten years, the state added 346 km of new rail lines and completed 487 km of doubling and tripling. Additionally, 100% electrification was achieved, with 1,959 km powered.

During the same period, authorities completed 293 road underbridges, 43 overbridges, and 49 foot overbridges. He also stated that 96% of construction at Komaravelli Railway Station is complete. Furthermore, MMTS Phase II works at Yadadri will begin shortly.

Reddy noted that 40 stations in Telangana are being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Recently completed stations include Begumpet, Warangal, and Karimnagar. Meanwhile, Vande Bharat maintenance facilities are under development at Secunderabad and Kacheguda.

Finally, the minister said a Centre for Excellence has been established at IRISET, Secunderabad, to fast-track the rollout of Kavach and other advanced signalling technologies. The combined cost of all ongoing rail projects in Telangana currently stands at ₹42,219 crore.
