Hyderabad: Secunderabad railway station is undergoing a major redevelopment on the lines of an international airport. The busiest junction in South Central Railway is being upgraded with state-of-the-art facilities at a cost of Rs. 720 crore.
The redevelopment is being carried out in phases without causing inconvenience to passengers. According to the source, 69 percent of the works have already been completed.
Authorities are now working to speed up the remaining construction. The project is scheduled to become fully accessible to passengers by June 2027.
The redevelopment also aims to address long-standing traffic and parking problems around the station. A major multi-level parking facility is being constructed outside the station to accommodate hundreds of vehicles.
The parking block will have six floors. Officials are developing the facility as part of the wider effort to improve traffic movement around the railway station.
Integrated transport connectivity is another major component of the redevelopment. Skywalks are being constructed to connect pedestrians coming from the City Bus Stand towards Ganesh Temple with the station.
The planned connectivity also includes the C Kindrabad East and West Metro stations. These links are intended to allow passengers to reach the railway station directly without having to navigate road traffic.
The project also includes an innovative roof plaza. The facility is being developed above the station to help manage passenger movement and reduce congestion on the platforms.
Secunderabad railway station to get green infrastructure
The redevelopment of Secunderabad railway station also includes several environment-focused features. Large solar panels will be used for power generation as part of the planned infrastructure.
Sewage treatment plants and rainwater harvesting systems are also included in the project. Meanwhile, roofing work is being intensified with modern aerodynamic designs.
The new roofing is designed to allow natural light and air to circulate across the platforms. These features are intended to improve the passenger environment while supporting the station’s broader infrastructure upgrade.
Large terminal buildings are also taking shape on both sides of the station. The North Terminal and South Terminal are being developed with modern facilities for passengers.
The North Terminal will have a ground floor and four additional floors. It is planned to include large ticketing centres, VIP lounges and modern waiting halls.
Construction of key concrete pillars and slabs at the North Terminal has reached the final stage. The work is progressing as part of the phased redevelopment programme.
The South Terminal is being developed as a G+3 structure. Construction has gained momentum, while ramps are being connected to the entry and exit routes.
These ramps will allow passengers to move directly towards their respective platforms. The design is intended to improve passenger movement between the terminal areas and platforms.
The roof plaza will add another major passenger facility to the redeveloped station. It is planned to include spacious seating areas, food courts, children’s play areas and retail outlets.
Passengers will be able to wait in the roof plaza before their trains arrive. Once the designated train reaches the platform, passengers will be able to move down through a modern skywalk network.
Escalators and lifts will connect the roof plaza with the platforms. As a result, the planned system is expected to help regulate passenger movement and reduce congestion.
By June 2027, the redevelopment is scheduled to provide Telangana’s capital with another major piece of modern railway infrastructure. The project combines new terminals, parking, pedestrian connectivity, environmental systems and passenger facilities.
