Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed officials to fast-track the Tummidihetti Barrage project and prepare an action plan for its construction.
He issued the directions at a high-level review meeting held at MCRHRD on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Tummala Nageswara Rao, Vem Narender Reddy and senior officials.
Officials presented details on different height options and water utilisation capacity for the Tummidihetti Barrage project. They said the government had already spent nearly ₹11,000 crore on the Pranahita-Chevella project, with 71.5 km of canal works completed.
Tummidihetti Barrage project height options reviewed
Experts suggested a height of 150 metres for the barrage. They said this would enable utilisation of at least 100 TMC of water.
They noted that Maharashtra had earlier agreed to a height of 148 metres. However, a 152-metre structure could lead to submergence in Maharashtra territory.
Therefore, experts proposed 150 metres as a balanced option. In addition, they said it would reduce costs and limit submergence impact.
Tummidihetti Barrage project to boost irrigation
Revanth Reddy said the Tummidihetti Barrage project would supply irrigation and drinking water to upland regions, including Adilabad. Moreover, he said water could reach the Sripada Yellampalli reservoir through gravity.
He said this approach would reduce overall project costs. Therefore, he emphasised quick execution.
The Chief Minister directed officials to begin discussions with the Maharashtra government immediately. He added that Telangana would offer compensation if any submergence occurred.
Tummidihetti Barrage project linked to Centre support
He instructed Uttam Kumar Reddy to write to Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy seeking support. He said the Centre’s role was important in persuading Maharashtra.
Officials also decided to seek an appointment with the Union Minister for direct discussions. Meanwhile, Uttam Kumar Reddy was assigned responsibility for the task.
The Chief Minister said a formal request would be sent on behalf of Telangana farmers. Further, he urged officials to expedite geo-testing works for Medigadda Barrage restoration before the monsoon.
