Rare liver transplant performed on toddler at Osmania General Hospital

Hyderabad: A rare liver transplant on an 18-month-old child suffering from Glycogen Storage Disease was successfully performed at Osmania General Hospital, marking a major achievement for the state-run hospital.

Doctors carried out the complex surgery on the infant, who weighed only 10 kilograms. The procedure lasted for more than 14 hours.

The child’s father donated a portion of his liver for the transplant.

Doctors said the surgery posed major challenges because of the child’s age, low body weight and complications linked to Glycogen Storage Disease. However, the surgical team completed the transplant successfully.
