N Ramchander Rao placed under house arrest ahead of protest

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao was placed under house arrest by police ahead of planned protests in the city.

The BJP had called for nationwide protests after the failure of Bills in Parliament. As part of this, the state unit planned a demonstration in front of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s residence.

Police stepped up security measures and confined BJP leaders to their residences. They placed N Ramchander Rao and other leaders under house arrest in Tarnaka to prevent the protest.

House arrest imposed as BJP plans protest over Bill

Ramchander Rao criticised the Congress over developments in Parliament. According to him, the party suppressed women’s voices by opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill.

Moreover, he accused the state government of undermining democracy by restricting protests. Preventing demonstrations, he said, violates democratic rights.

He also alleged that Congress adopted a double standard on the Bill. Earlier, the party supported it, but it later opposed it, he claimed.

On women’s representation, Ramchander Rao said 33 per cent reservation would expand opportunities in politics. However, he argued that Congress resisted it due to political interests.

Referring to past delays, he said the party had postponed the Bill for decades. In addition, he described the restrictions on protests as creating an “emergency-like” situation.

He added that people would not forgive attempts to block women’s rights and democratic expression.
