Phone tapping case: Prabhakar Rao surrenders before SIT in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Former Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) chief T. Prabhakar Rao surrendered before the Jubilee Hills Police on Friday in the alleged phone tapping case. His appearance followed explicit directions from the Supreme Court. He then presented himself before the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing claims of illegal surveillance.

Officials said the SIT had begun questioning him. They noted that custodial interrogation could reveal details about the planning and scale of the network.

The Supreme Court ordered Rao to surrender and cooperate with investigators. The bench also set strict safeguards. It directed the SIT not to use third-degree methods or cause physical harm. Because of his age, the court asked officers to treat him with dignity and allow home-cooked food.

The next hearing was set for December 19. By then, the SIT must report progress. With Rao now in custody, officials expect the probe to move faster.
