Hyderabad: In what has been described as a landmark move for worker welfare in the country, the Telangana government on Monday handed over an accident insurance payout of one crore rupees to the family of a deceased electricity worker.
Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu presented the cheque at a sombre gathering in Praja Bhavan, honouring the late Jogun Naresh, who died on duty while working for the Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (NPDCL). Alongside the compensation, Naresh’s wife Ramesh Shrimati received a job appointment in the electricity department under compassionate grounds.
“This is the first time in India’s history that an electricity worker’s family is receiving accident insurance of this magnitude,” said the Deputy CM, crediting Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and the Indiramma government for prioritising labour welfare. He asserted that previous administrations had failed to provide such substantive support to frontline workers.

Bhatti Vikramarka described the dual gesture of insurance and employment as a reflection of the state’s humane governance and a clear expression of its policy ethos. The initiative, he noted, draws inspiration from a similar scheme first introduced in Singareni and later expanded to cover electricity department employees.
“When a worker knows that their family is protected, they can serve with greater commitment,” he said, urging electricity staff to continue their public service with renewed dedication.
The Deputy CM also lauded NPDCL CMD Varun Reddy for effectively implementing the government’s vision. Senior officials from the power and banking sectors, along with state advisor Vem Narender Reddy, were present at the event.
