Hyderabad: The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) has started using the Pole-Mounted Distribution Transformer (PMDT) system to upgrade transformer installation across Hyderabad.
Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Faruqui said the PMDT system uses less space, improves safety, and keeps the area around transformers clean and orderly. He added that the system also makes repairs and regular checks much easier for staff.
PMDT system replaces old setup
Earlier, installing a transformer needed 30–35 square feet and a week to build a concrete base. Extra poles were required for other gear like fuse sets and switches. This setup led to clutter, garbage, and made maintenance difficult.
With PMDT, the transformer is mounted 6 to 9 feet high on a single 11-meter pole. The pole has a 377 mm diameter and holds all the needed equipment. Staff can install everything in one day. One person using a bucket ladder can safely do repairs. Underground cables can also connect easily.
Over 100 PMDT units already in place
Transformers with 63, 100, and 160 kVA capacities are now being installed under this system. While 11-meter poles work on wide roads, narrow lanes pose problems. TGSPDCL is using 9.5-meter poles in such areas and is also looking at using this setup for larger transformers.
So far, TGSPDCL has finished over 100 installations. Work is happening at 304 sites in Greater Hyderabad. The company is identifying risky or road-blocking transformers through its “Kurrentolla Prajabata” programme and replacing them with PMDT units.
Faruqui said more installations would follow soon. He added that the system is a key part of modernising Telangana’s power supply and making it safer and more reliable.
